The European Board of Orthopaedics and Traumatology Examination 2011
The written section will be taken separately from the oral examination.
Section 1
The written section will be completed online and will consist of 100 multiple choice
questions (MCQs) in the single correct answer format. It will be held in the different
examination centres in Europe on 9 June 2011. Applicants need to pass Section 1 to proceed
to Section 2.
Section 2
The oral examination will take place in Paris, France, on 1 and 2 October
2011.
Requirements for EU citizens:- Citizenship of the European Union (EU), including Norway, Switzerland & new countries
joining the European Union (EU).
- Certificate of full qualification as an orthopaedic surgeon from a national authority (EU
Orthopaedic Society).
- Fluency in English.
Requirements for non(EU citizens working in a non(EU or EU country:
- Certificate of registration as a specialist orthopaedic surgeon from the national
registration authority in the country in which it was obtained.
- A letter from the present head of the department where you are working, stating your
professional status.
- Fluency in English.
Requirements for trainees in their last year of training and in a recognised European
Training Scheme Programme:
- Two structured references from:
1. Head of training at the hospital
2. The orthopaedic surgeon responsible for your training
(print from EBOT website and send originals to the EBOT office)
- Trainees will not be able to take Section 2 of the EBOT examination until they have
passed their national exam and obtained a certificate of full qualification as an
orthopaedic surgeon from their national authority (EU Orthopaedic Society).
- Fluency in English.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN:
We look forward to welcoming you to Sun City in the North West province for our annual SAOA congress – Sun City always promises to be a social and well attended congress and although we have continued with the 4 day congress there is time enough for an interesting and varied academic programme as well as the opportunity to meet up with old friends and colleagues and to make new ones.
On the doorstep of Sun City is the Pilanesberg National Park which covers 55 000 hectares and is the fourth largest Game Reserve in Southern Africa. The malaria-free Pilanesberg has survived ages of erosion and stands high above the surrounding bushveld plains. An abundance of wild life can be seen in this diverse bushveld terrain. The Park is home to lion, leopard, black and white rhino, elephant and buffalo - Africa’s “Big Five”.
We welcome and encourage Accompanying persons and families. The Accompanying persons’ committee is arranging a varied programme of tours and entertainment. The academic programme includes three Instructional Courses and specialty days arranged by the SAOA in conjunction with the Knee Society (SAKS), the Shoulder and Elbow Society (SASES) and the Trauma Society. We are excited and honoured to work with these Societies. The idea is to allocate the free papers appropriately to the specialty day, but there will be ample time for free papers on other topics as well. As has become the tradition, trade workshops will be part of the programme. Please submit abstracts for free papers and posters to be presented at the congress. Abstracts maybe submitted online at http://www.saoa.org.za before Friday 29 April 2011.
The traditional Golf Tournament will be held at the Lost City Golf course on the Sunday prior to the congress.

A one day conference aimed at Orthopaedic and Plastic Consultants and those registrars and fellows preparing for the FRCS (Tr & Orth) examination.
The course will discuss the management of Orthopaedic Metastatic Bone Disease and the need for a multidisciplinary approach when planning treatment. The discussion will encompass the use of Endo Prosthetic Replacement as well as more conventional surgical treatment such as intramedullary nails. Different treatment options will be presented for the management of common metastatic presentations and there will be an interactive debate on a variety of cases. The conference will act as a forum for professionals to discuss different treatment options.
